ONGOING PROJECTS

DAFFODIL MILE PROJECT: The most important project for the SSGC for the next two years will be the planning and fund-raising for the Daffodil Mile in the Abernathy Greenway Linear Park. A Champagne Tea was held at Glenridge Hall in Sandy Springs to introduce city and civic leaders to the project. This event was hostessed by the Sandy Springs Garden Club and the Spalding Garden Club. http://daffodilmile.org

Operation Figleaf: The garden club buys new packaged under-garments for the patients of the Milledgeville State Hospital patients. They are given by members at the December holiday luncheon. This is an on-going project of the Garden Club of Georgia in which the club has participated for several years. http://gardenclub.uga.edu/therapy.html

Williams-Payne House Memorial Garden: Established by the garden club, this garden is located beside the historic Williams Payne House. It is refurbished and maintained by club members. A plaque at the site lists the garden club members who have been active for more than 30 years in the garden club, and this garden is in their honor. http://www.heritagesandysprings.org/

Feed the Birds at Big Trees: The garden club bird-feeding schedule at the historic Big Trees Preserve involves maintaining the bird feeders from October through December each year. The club works with three other clubs to keep the feeders in good shape, as well as to add new ones when needed. http://www.bigtreesforest.com

Workshops: The garden club has several members who are expert in fields ranging from arranging flowers to creating garden ornaments. During the year members participate in such workshops as miniature flower arranging, making flower leaf concrete dishes, hyper-tufa troughs for the garden, beading and jewelry, planting containers with found objects, and making holiday and seasonal decorations. Club members also attend workshops held at local floral and plant nursery locations that are sponsored by our district and federation.

Flower Show and Workshop: One of the club's master arrangers taught a workshop for members prior to a Petite Standard Flower Show held by the Dogwood District. Members worked on staging, setup, schedule writing, and making centerpieces. The club hosted the judge's luncheon for the flower show. Many of the club members entered the flower show and won blue ribbons. One of the members won Best in Show Horticulture specimen.

Planters at Local School: The garden club maintains seasonal planting in several schools including Holy Innocents' School in Sandy Springs. Members choose plants to fill hanging baskets and large planters. Many of the materials are donated by the club members.

Shakespeare Reading Garden: The garden club has landscaped one of the entrances to the reading park adjacent to the Sandy Springs Library, and the club adds plants as needed throughout the year.
